More Than Great Sandwiches: How Penn Station’s Award-Winning Cause Marketing Strengthens Our Franchise System
At Penn Station Sandwiches, we’ve always believed that serving great food is only part of our purpose.
For more than 40 years, we’ve built our business around hometown values, community involvement, and giving back. Today, with more than 320 restaurants across 14 states, that commitment remains one of the strongest differentiators of our brand.
In 2026, that commitment was recognized on a national stage when Penn Station Sandwiches received the International Franchise Association (IFA) Innovation Award for Cause Marketing for our Deals for Down Syndrome campaign.
While we’re incredibly proud of the recognition, we’re even more proud of what it represents: a franchise system that creates meaningful local impact while strengthening sales, customer loyalty, and community relationships.
A Cause That’s Been Part of Our Story for More than a Decade
Supporting the Down syndrome community is a mission we are passionate about.
Together, Penn Station Sandwiches and our guests raised more than $2 million through checkout round-ups, proving that our customers genuinely wanted to support the cause.
But we knew we could do more.
Turning a Passive Donation into an Experience
Like many restaurant brands, we recognized an opportunity to make our fundraising efforts even more engaging.
As guest expectations evolved, we saw a chance to create a program that offered more value while continuing to support an important cause. At the same time, local Down Syndrome Associations were looking for creative ways to expand awareness and deepen community engagement.
We asked ourselves a simple question:
How could we create a fundraising program that delivered more value for everyone involved?
The answer became Deals for Down Syndrome.
Instead of asking guests to simply round up their purchase, we created a value exchange.
Guests donated $5 and received a booklet containing more than $20 worth of free Penn Station Sandwiches food. Every dollar donated stayed local, directly benefiting the Down Syndrome Association serving that restaurant’s community.
The result transformed fundraising from a quick checkout question into something customers actively wanted to participate in.
Empowering Every Franchisee to Make a Local Impact
One of the biggest strengths of the campaign was its local focus.
Every Penn Station Sandwiches franchisee had the opportunity to partner directly with their area’s Down Syndrome Association, creating authentic relationships that extended far beyond the restaurant.
Throughout October, franchisees participated in:
- Joint social media campaigns
- In-store fundraising events
- Buddy Walk sponsorships and participation
- Community check presentations
- Educational awareness efforts
- Team member fundraising incentives
Instead of simply displaying a donation box, franchise owners became active participants in their communities.
For franchisees, this meant stronger local visibility, deeper community connections, and meaningful opportunities to engage both customers and employees around a shared purpose.
Marketing That Builds Brand Equity
The campaign didn’t stop inside our restaurants.
Penn Station Sandwiches supported franchisees with a coordinated national marketing strategy that included:
- Point-of-purchase materials across all restaurants
- Booklets and promotional assets
- Public relations outreach
- National media coverage
- Social media campaigns
- Founder and family storytelling videos
- Franchisee marketing support
The campaign earned coverage from QSR Magazine, Franchising.com, PR Newswire, and regional television outlets – generating more than 2.4 million earned media impressions while increasing awareness for both Penn Station Sandwiches and our nonprofit partners.
Real Results for Communities and Franchisees
The inaugural Deals for Down Syndrome campaign exceeded expectations.
Together, Penn Station Sandwiches restaurants raised $348,820 for local Down Syndrome Associations during the campaign.
In addition to supporting an incredible cause, the campaign generated more than $401,000 in bounce-back offers – encouraging guests to return to their local Penn Station restaurants while continuing to build customer loyalty during a traditionally slower sales period.
Most importantly, every booklet purchased helped fund programs that make a lasting difference, including:
- Summer camps for children and young adults with Down syndrome
- New-parent resource kits and family support services
- Educational programming for schools and classrooms
- Advocacy initiatives and lifelong community connection opportunities
This is exactly what great franchise marketing should accomplish: creating value for customers, strengthening local businesses, and making a measurable impact where it matters most.
Why This Matters to Prospective Franchise Owners
When people evaluate franchise opportunities, they often focus on food, operations, or financial performance. Those matter. But culture matters, too.
At Penn Station Sandwiches, we believe successful franchise systems are built by owners who are actively involved in their business.
Our franchisees don’t just operate restaurants. They build relationships, support local organizations, and create meaningful experiences for the neighborhoods they serve.
The IFA Innovation Award validates something we’ve believed all along: purpose-driven marketing can strengthen both communities and businesses.
It’s one more example of how Penn Station Sandwiches continues to innovate while staying true to the hometown values that have defined our brand for more than four decades.
